SECRETS OF TRAVEL PACKAGING

Lodgers, restaurants and attractions interested in increasing their visitor traffic make plans to attend this travel packaging workshop presented by the Cascade Highlands Tourism Association on June 22 from 9a-5p at the Hampton Inn at Shelton Vineyards, 150 Charlestowne Drive, Dobson, NC. I've been to Cascade Highlands programs and they are first class. Little or no travel packaging is done in Alleghany. It is low-hanging fruit. The $20 registration includes lunch. TONIGHT: "THE MERRY LOVE A FIDDLE"
A musical narrative of the history of mountain fiddling will be presented by Lucas Pasley on Thursday, May 27 at 6:30p at the Alleghany Library. The audience will enjoy a mixture of traditional fiddling, history, and humor. This program is sponsored by the Alleghany Arts Council with partial funding by a NC Arts Council Grassroots Grant. 336-372-5573

MEMORIAL DAY YARD SALE
Chris Davis of Studio Redwood, 10436 US 21 South in Roaring Gap, is holding a yard sale Saturday, May 29, 9a-1p, of painted furniture, giclee prints, gift and decorative items. MUSIC AND DANCE TO FIGHT POLIO
Enjoy a night of traditional music and dance Friday, May 28, beginning at the Alleghany Jubilee sponsored by the Alleghany Rotary Club to help eliminate polio. The Borderline band will play and the Jubilee Dancers will perform. Hillbilly Wes will make you laugh. Flat-foot dancing contest, cake walks, a 50/50 drawing, and other activities planned. MEMORIAL WEEKEND EXPO
Over 30 exhibitors are slated to be at Business and Tourism Expo Memorial Day weekend at Village Park (former Charleston Forge plant) Saturday-Monday, May 29-31. There is plenty of room inside. Expect a big day Saturday, kicking off with the VFW showing of the colors and flag demonstration at 10a and ending at 6p. Sunday hours: 1-4p; Monday 10a-4p. Don't delay. NATIVE AMERICAN GATHERING
Come out to Triple E Stables, the home of Alleghany Trail Blazers, Saturday, May 29, for an authentic Native American Gathering of the Metis tribe. Performances at 1p and 4p. These Native Americans performed for the county's 150 celebration and they provided a great program. Located 6 miles from Sparta on US 21 South. Concessions available. 336-372-5366

MOUNTAIN MYSTIQUE PARK PROGRAM

Join a Park Ranger at the New River State Park, 58 Hwy 221 N Access Road, Laurel Springs, for a look back in time: how the settlers of this area lived in these Appalachian Mountains. Meet at the 221 Visitor Center's Auditorium at 2P Saturday, May 29, for this 45 minute program. 336-982-2587

VISIONS BAND AT THE DOLLAR

NEW RIVER PARK CANOE TRIP
Join Park Rangers at the US 221 Visitor Center for this 2-hour float down the Wild and Scenic New River Sunday, June 6, and Sunday, June 27, 12:30-2:30p. Learn basic paddle strokes and other useful information. Must be able to carry and load the canoes. The Rangers will interpret many sights along the route. Limited to 8 visitors per trip, call the park to register. The outfitters charge a minimal fee for shuttling. 336-982-2587

ACT READERS THEATRE PERFORMANCE
Melissa Caudill and Jim Williams present a readers theater performance of SAME TIME NEXT YEAR at the Senior Center Wednesday, June 9, and again at the Alleghany Library Friday, June 11. Both performances are at 7p. The play concerns New Jersey accountant George and Oakland, California housewife Doris meet at a Northern California inn in February 1951. They have an affair, then agree to meet once a year, despite the fact both are married to others and have six children between them. A 1978 film adaptation starred Ellen Burstyn and Alan Alda. Our foyer is always open and a brochure is always available.
>> Driving Loops: Brochures for three driving loops of the Alleghany countryside are available at the Alleghany Chamber of Commerce and Visitors' Center. Each loop is a about a leisurely hour's drive and includes information on historic points along the way. The Chamber office is in the rock building with the green awning (58 South Main St., Sparta). Our foyer is always open and a brochure is always available.
