JUNIOR OLYMPIC VOLLEYBALL THIS SATURDAY: Several hundred young women (as well as family, coaches and fans) from all over the state will be in Sparta this weekend to compete at Alleghany High School. And where they are not playing, they'll be shopping, eating and doing whatever in our town. Make them feel especially welcome. Winter visitors are not that easy to come by and they may like us so much they come back in the summer! Check out SpartaVB.com for more information.

WANT TO START A RESTAURANT: Grayson National Bank is holding a sale of restaurant equipment that formerly belonged to Todd's Dining Car, 517 West Stuart Dr., Hillsville, VA. There will be an open house on Jan. 20 at 10:30a to preview the equipment as well. Check the list of items for sale: http://sparta-nc.com/RestEquipSale1-27-12.pdf

NEW MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: Fox Creek Leather: You don’t need to read the sign to know what Fox Creek Leather is about. The smell of leather is in the air as you walk in. Motorcycle jackets, chaps, vests, gloves (they have the largest selection of deer- and elk-skin gloves I have ever seen), belts, wallets, tack for horsemen, horseshoes, saddle bags, spurs and straps and other apparel – all made in the USA. About the only non-leather items are the sunglasses. Located in the former Black Rock Motel building 2 miles north of Independence, VA, 2029 Elk Creek Parkway (US 21), it does a big business with the many motorcyclists who love to ride our mountain roads. And their fall customer-appreciation ride is a must attend event. You never know who will turn up. Last year’s riders returned to the store to a performance of Kelley and the Cowboys. They were as mesmerized as much by Kelley Breidling’s and the Boys’ mix of country  and swing as folks at our Mountain Heritage Festival. Great close out specials are going on right now. Check them out at FoxCreekLeather.com and check out VTwinBiker.com for photos of the 2011 Customer Appreciation Celebration. 800-766-4165   276-773-3131

GUYS, IT'S NEVER TOO EARLY TO THINK OF THAT SPECIAL SOMEONE: Hair Gallery 21 and Skintastic have teamed up for some spa specials that would warm the heart of your special someone now or on Valentine's Day. Ladies, some of us men are thick skinned, so print out the following list of offerings and leave copies around the home. 336-372-6464

Bill Graham's passing: I sent out a notice about Bill Graham's funeral last week that said nothing would be in this week's Alleghany News about his passing. I meant to say that since he died on a Wednesday nothing was in the previous week's issue. I also said he died of cancer. I've been informed that was not correct. These are the kind of mistakes I make when I'm in hurry. I just wanted to set the record straight. It was a very nice celebration of the life of an interested fellow citizen.
