COURTHOUSE GUNFIGHT CENTENNIAL: On March 14, 1912 gunfire erupted in the Carroll County (VA) Courthouse during the sentencing of Floyd Allen to prison. Allen declared, "Gentlemen, I just ain't a goin'," and gunfire erupted between armed members of the court and the Allen family. This bit of history being commemorated with the play, "Thunder in the Hills," recreating the events in the same Courthouse on March 9-11, 16-18 and 23-25 (I've heard third hand that the first three performances are already sold out) and a symposium on March 12 and 13. I highlight this event at our neighbors to the north because it was such a notorious happening and because many of the descendants of the Allens and others involve live in our county. Check the Centennial Website for details and how to get tickets.

WAYNE ANDREWS DOING WELL: Wayne Andrews underwent surgery last week for a brain aneurysm and is recovering nicely. Wayne is a Chamber Board Member and local builder. Those of you who know Wayne, know he recently suffered a fall off a 2-story roof. The aneurysm was discovered while doctors were looking for further damage from the fall. Thanks for keeping him in your thoughts and prayers.

VOTE FOR SPARTA: Readers Digest is offering $50,000 to the small town that receives the most online votes in their "We Hear You America." You can vote as often as you like. The good news is that since it is limited to small towns, we're not competing against Charlotte or Atlanta. We already have 4 votes and I cast two of them, so boot up those computers and GET TO VOTING. We need all the help we can get.  Click for details. (If we win the $50,000 and can't decide what to do with the money, the Chamber will happily accept it.)
