Keep voting to raise the roof. They've extended the vote through December and if you saw the roof when it collapsed last week, you know how important this it. So help the Alleghany Wellness Center with the Pepsi Raise the Roof Campaign to replace the canvas and vinyl cover over their pool with an insulated roof. To be awarded the grant, your vote is needed EVERY DAY!

Alleghany County is surveying the community for a Comprehensive Transportation Plan to guide development in the coming years. It's quick and easy and online! Rebecca Todd, massage therapist at Holistic Health and Wellness, is offering special package deals and Christmas gift certificates. What a great Christmas present! Special classes on getting government business
Get a jump on that New Years commitment to increase your company’s sales efforts. Take an afternoon and learn how to do business with government agencies. Appalachian State University’s Procurement Technical Assistance Center (PTAC) is hosting two no-cost classes Tuesday, December 7. “Doing Business with the Government” will be held from 1–3p and “Bidding and Proposal Basics” will be held from 3–5p. Both classes will be at the Small Business Technology Development Center offices located in the North Carolina Center for Engineering Technologies at 1990 Main Avenue SE in Hickory. Those attending will come away with the tools to increase their Government sales efforts in the New Year. Contact Chris Hayes at (828) 345-1110 to register.

There is a lot to do this weekend!
This is the traditional big Choose and Cut weekend and there is certainly a lot to do. First if you haven't got your tree, this is the weekend to do so. Check the list of farms then get that tree and start enjoying the Christmas season. High Country Lights have moved to Glade Creek Fire Department, but they are better than ever and there's a place to park! The Christmas Craft Fair will be at the Black Building on Saturday. Stop by for a special gift or a snack to support Razor's Edge Skate Park. The Alleghany Historical Museum is holding it's grand opening. Did I mention the Singing Christmas Tree. You need it. I need it so make plans to come to the Wellness Center for a special program on Wiping Out Stress.

Friday-Sunday, Dec. 3-5
Enjoy the spirit of the season at the community Singing Christmas Tree, held at First Baptist Church.

Saturday, Dec. 4
Find a special handmade gift for a friend or something for yourself at the Christmas Craft Show at the Black Building at the County Fairgrounds.

Our own museum, the Alleghany Historical Museum, is open and they are celebrating their grand opening at 2 p.m. Be sure to stop by.

Sunday, Dec. 5
The Piney Creek Dirty Fingers Garden Club presents a Christmas Tour of Seven Homes from 1 to 5 p.m. Proceeds will go to retire the debt for the construction of a kitchen and bathroom at the Meeting House. Tickets are available from Sara McMillan 336-359-2285.

New River State Park is presenting a program and hike about area birds. This is a great program for the entire family.

Wednesday, Dec. 8
Everyone is invited to the Community Advent Service at Sparta United Methodist Church and followed by a light lunch.

Thursday, Dec. 9
A Readers' Theater production of A Christmas Carol will be presented in the Senior Center.

Saturday, Dec. 11
Enjoy some of the finest in traditional music with Kruger Brothers and Wayne Henderson in concert at the Ashe Civic Center to benefit the Junior Appalachian Musician program.

It's an old-fashioned Moravian Mountain Christmas at Laurel Ridge in Laurel Springs. Enjoy ornament-making, hayrides, cookie decorating, storytelling, sing-alongs, and more.

Separate myth from fact about black bears in the New River Park program the entire family will enjoy.

Sunday, Dec. 12

Get in the Christmas spirit at the annual Cornerstone Christian Fellowship Christmas Coffeehouse.

Sparta United Methodist Church invites you to a special double header. Following their 11 a.m. service, the Mission Meal goes to support Alleghany Lives, the local group working to decrease suicide and depression. It is followed by a special musical Christmas program at 1:30 p.m. Plan to come for worship and stay for both programs.

>> Alleghany Jubilee: Come to listen or come to dance to the blue grass and old time musicians who play on Tuesday beginning at 7p and Saturday at 8p. Admission $4. The Jubilee is located on North Main Street, across from the courthouse. 336-372-4591
>> Crouse House Pickers: Local blue grass and old time musicians jam each Monday, 2 blocks north of the Courthouse at the Crouse House in Crouse Park, beginning at 6p. Come and play or just listen. No charge, but a donation is appreciated. 336-372-5473
>> Silver Dollar Music Park: Line dance lessons every Monday 6-8:30p. Supper served at 6p and lessons at 7p. Get both for $12; just a lesson or just a meal for $7. Check the website calendar. 336-372-6874

>>Barn Quilt Trails: Barns and other structures throughout Alleghany County are adorned with large squares illustrating quilt patterns and add interest to a driving tour of the countryside. Drop by Alleghany Chamber of Commerce and Visitors' Center for a brochure. We are in the rock building with the green awning (58 South Main Street, Sparta). Our foyer is always open and a brochure is always available.
>>Driving Loops: Brochures for three driving loops of the Alleghany countryside are available at the Alleghany Chamber of Commerce and Visitors' Center. Each loop is about a leisurely hour's drive and includes information on historic points along the way. The Chamber office is in the rock building with the green awning (58 South Main Street, Sparta). Our foyer is always open and a brochure is always available.
