Street Dance and Costume Contest
Sparta -
Dress up in your oldest attire and join your friends and neighbors for the 150th Anniversary Street Dance and Costume Contest at 6p Friday in the parking lot of First Community Bank, 57 North Main Street. Talk of the Town will supply the music. Prizes awarded for best men's and women's costume in the pioneer, hillbilly and antebellum categories. Be sure to save your duds to wear Saturday at Mountain Heritage. 336-372-4591

The largest Mountain Heritage Festival ever on Main Street
Sparta -
Pray for sun because we have a lot of folk set to set up on Main Street from 10a-4:30p. There are close to 120 booths -- food, artisans, demonstrators, and others -- scheduled to set up on Main Street between Doughton Street and Grandview Drive. Our chain-saw carver returns. We have a blacksmith who will be making cutlery, Native American demonstrations, horse-shoeing, chair caning, leatherwork and long rifles, pottery, stone carving and much more. A climbing wall and bounce house for the kids at First Baptist Church. Check Sparta-NC.com/heritage for the entertainment schedule. And, of course, it all culminates in the crowning of the Possum Queen.

Storytelling contest heads up Library Heritage Day activities
Sparta -
There's a day full of activities at the Alleghany Library on Saturday. 'Tell a Tale' Storytelling Contest begins at 10:30a. Cash prizes awarded in children, teen and adult categories. There is no fee to enter but pre-registration is recommended. Visiting storyteller, Jerry Vencill, will be telling tales and help judge. Old-fashioned town on display all day. The Junior Friends will have a book sale. Bernie Wrege will be demonstrating rug hooking from 10:30a-12:30p.
