Quilters demonstrate their art,
bring pride to the county

The Alleghany Quilters Guild has put on a real display of their skill and community pride in the past few days. Monday, representatives presented their sesquicentinial quilt to the Board of County Commissioners. This 7- by 11-foot masterpiece shows the county map ringed by prominent buildings and locations from around Alleghany. (Click to see photo.) This quilt will be on display at this weekend's big quilt show (see info below) and then find a permanent home in the County Administrations Building.
And if that wasn't enough, last week, the last of 35 barn quilt squares was hung on barns and other prominent buildings in our county. The image at the right is one of two on Twin Oaks General Store. There's one on the new bandstand in Crouse Park and on Alleghany Arts and Craft, beside the Courthouse. Great job, quilters. You not only show your considerable skill but bring attention and honor to our county.

Program for vendors of baked goods,
jams, jellies and home canned goods
Sparta -
A program on North Carolina Department of Agriculture regulations for vendors of baked and canned goods will be offered in the former commissioners’ board room in old County Office Building at 90 South Main Street (beside Medi-Home Care) at 5:30p. Individuals and representatives of civic and church groups are invited to learn what is required and not required. The Chamber is sponsoring this program because several churches have said they'd sell baked and canned goods at the Mountain Heritage Festival, but they are anxious of running afoul of these regulations. I think most groups will find compliance is not as difficult as they imagine after this program. If is open to anyone, not just folks interested in vending in the Mountain Heritage Festival. 336-372-5473
