The Chamber of Commerce Calendaring Meeting will be held on Wed., Feb. 1, at 5:15 p.m. in the conference room of the Alleghany Inn. Every organization in the community that holds a public event or fundraiser is invited to come and post their activity on the 2012 calendar. The meeting is an attempt to create as complete a calendar as possible for the year and to spot possible conflicting events in time for scheduling changes. Please bring as much information on the event that is currently available. All events will be posted on the Chamber’s calendar at www.Sparta-nc.com. The more complete the information, the fewer times the Chamber will have to update that notice. Participants will post their event on a large calendar and fill out a community event form with available details. It should take no more than 30 minutes. For more information or questions, call 336-372-5473 or drop by the Chamber at 58 South Main Street, Sparta.

QUICK EDITORIAL - Sports double-header brings folk to Sparta:  With a 2A/1A Wrestling Conference Tournament in the old AHS gym and 10 14-year-old brass Junior Olympic Volleyball teams competing in the new gym, there will be a number of visitors in the county Saturday. We don't think of winter weekends as a time to welcome folk into the area, but these visitors eat and shop much like summer folk. If you bump into them, give them a hearty Alleghany welcome. The retail trade visitors bring is always welcome, but particularly in January. Check out our website to introduce the weekly J.O. Vollleyball teams to the area.

Clay Matthews
SPEAKING OF WRESTLING:  An authentic Green Bay Packer jersey has been donated by Green Bay's popular linebacker, Clay Matthews (#52), to the Murphy wrestlers to raffle for Luke. The jersey is accompanied by a letter of authenticity. All proceeds go to benefit Luke Hampton. Tickets are $5 each or five for $20. The drawing will be held on February 18 during the 1A West Regional Wrestling Finals at the Thomas Jefferson Classical Academy near Forest City, NC. Tickets may be purchased locally at the Alleghany High School office. Call 372-4554 for more information.

Sparta Invis-A-Rack Inventor, Donny McCall, made me proud during his appearance on "Shark Tank".  You could tell that several of the "sharks" were moved by his appeal -- one shared some personal history about his late father's factory jog -- but no one offered him money because he stood by making his Invis-A-Rack in the USA. This really is worth seeing. Click on the Shark Tank website to view the episode.

The New York Giants and New England Patriots square off in the Super Bowl for the second time in just four years on Sunday, Feb. 5.

The MarketWatch.com website has estimated that Americans will consume 1.5 billion chicken wings during the final football match-up of the season. Don't be left out.
