KUDOS TO AMH and the Community: I was one of the several hundred people who packed the Courtroom last night for Alleghany Memorial Hospital's forum on their request for help from the county, and I was impressed at the turnout and by the Hospital's response. If we are going to have a hospital in Alleghany County we need more of this kind of give and take.

PARKWAY WORKDAY : If you wanted to help get the Parkway in shape for the season but could not come out to last Saturday's Friends of the Parkway volunteer work day, the Friends will be on the Parkway again Saturday, May 5, beginning at 10a. Join them at Doughton Park picnic area with a bag lunch, gloves and any yard implements you may have (rakes, shovels, etc.). Snacks, drinks and water will be provided. Call 336-601-6118. (I apologize for the scary guy in the photo, but I knew is would get your attention.) It and other photos from their last workday are posted on the Chamber's Facebook Page. And speaking of Facebook, there are photos from the recent Rotary Blood Drive!

HELP BICYCLE PATHWAYS PLANNING: High Country Council of Governments is developing a bike plan for Yancey, Mitchell, Avery, Watauga, Ashe, Alleghany, and Wilkes counties.  The Plan is intended to improve safety, access, and mobility for cyclists by developing a network of designated routes that connect municipalities and other major destinations in the region. They ask for citizens to complete a survey of 23 questions, and is geared towards cyclists and non-cyclists alike and will be available until May 4. Go to http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/HighCountryBikePlanSurvey and help improve bike travel in northwest North Carolina.
