DONNY McCALL ON ABC NEWS: Alleghany's own In-Vis-A-Rack inventor was featured on ABC evening news recently. The focus was on the support extended to him after the Shark Tank rejected his made-in-America focus. It's a upbeat segment that reviews his Shark Tank experience. Check it out.


BLUE RIDGE PARKWAY OPENS MAY 15: The Parkway will be open for traffic in Alleghany County. The campground, trails and picnic areas are open also. That's the good news. Not so good is that the Bluffs Lodge and Restaurant are not expected to be open until 2013. 


MOUNTAIN HEARTH LODGE ON UNC-TV: This was a nice, long feature on this bed and breakfast inn along the Blue Ridge Parkway. It certainly spotlights the beauty and attractiveness of our community. Check it out. It's the fourth segment of the May 3 broadcast video: http://www.unctv.org/ncweekend/
I had hoped to be able to link everyone to the Alleghany Museum feature and the JAM piece on North Carolina NOW, but the videos have not been posted yet.


CANOE CAMP FOR YOUR YOUNGSTER: Riverside Canoeing is again offering weekly canoe camps beginning June 18 and continuing through the summer. Plan now to introduce you son or daughter to the wonders of the New River and teach them the art of river navigation. Camp is held daily from 9a- 5p, Monday through Friday.  Participants learn how to paddle canoes and kayak, spending a majority of their day on the river.  Along with basic paddling techniques, campers learn how to handle a boat in many situations on the river, water and boating safety, and learn about the ecology and dynamics of the New River from New River State Park rangers and staff from the National Committee for the New River. At the end of the week, campers will be joined by their families for a paddling trip on the river so that they can demonstrate their new skills, followed by a family BBQ.  Maximum number of participants is 8.

HAPPENING EVERY WEEK: >> Alleghany Jubilee: Come to listen or come to dance to the blue grass and old time musicians who play on Tuesday beginning at 7p and Saturday at 8p. This Saturday a film crew from public television is slated to be at the Jubilee, so put on your best duds and let's show folks in TV land what mountain music and dancing is all about. Admission $4. NEW CHAMBER HOME PAGE: The home page for the Chamber of Commerce and Visitors' Center has a new home page. ON FACEBOOK: Great Show Trojan Playmakers If you were at the Community Auditorium (that's the new name for the former Sparta School Auditorium) last Saturday, you saw a first-rate student performance by our youngsters in Uncommonly Noble, an original play by faculty adviser, Cheri Choate. This play represents a successful revival of the Trojan Playmakers and new life for the Auditorium. The front portion of the stage has been rebuilt and other improvements show the work of the Friends of the Auditorium. Kudos to everyone. A few more photos are on the Chamber Facebook page. Check them out.


ALLEGHANY FEATURED ON NC NOW: UNC TV was in town recently videoing at the Alleghany Heritage Museum and at Mountain Hearth Lodge. I've been told the Museum will air tonight, May 1, and the Lodge will be on Wednesday or Thursday, May 2 or 3. The show is on at 7:30p each weeknight.



PARKWAY WORKDAY : If you wanted to help get the Parkway in shape for the season but could not come out to last Saturday's Friends of the Parkway volunteer work day, the Friends will be on the Parkway again Saturday, May 5, beginning at 10a. Join them at Doughton Park picnic area with a bag lunch, gloves and any yard implements you may have (rakes, shovels, etc.). Snacks, drinks and water will be provided. Call 336-601-6118. (I apologize for the scary guy in the photo, but I knew it would get your attention.) KUDOS TO AMH and the Community: I was one of the several hundred people who packed the Courtroom last night for Alleghany Memorial Hospital's forum on their request for help from the county, and I was impressed at the turnout and by the Hospital's response. If we are going to have a hospital in Alleghany County we need more of this kind of give and take.  

PARKWAY WORKDAY : If you wanted to help get the Parkway in shape for the season but could not come out to last Saturday's Friends of the Parkway volunteer work day, the Friends will be on the Parkway again Saturday, May 5, beginning at 10a. Join them at Doughton Park picnic area with a bag lunch, gloves and any yard implements you may have (rakes, shovels, etc.). HELP BICYCLE PATHWAYS PLANNING: High Country Council of Governments is developing a bike plan for Yancey, Mitchell, Avery, Watauga, Ashe, Alleghany, and Wilkes counties.  The Plan is intended to improve safety, access, and mobility for cyclists by developing a network of designated routes that connect municipalities and other major destinations in the region. They ask for citizens to complete a survey of 23 questions, and is geared towards cyclists and non-cyclists alike and will be available until May 4. Go to http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/HighCountryBikePlanSurvey and help improve bike travel in northwest North Carolina.

May is National "Older Americans Month" and the Alleghany Senior Center is celebrating all month with special events planned every Friday and will end the month-long celebration at Crouse Park on Friday, May 25 with a "Health Fair".  Senior Center Director Karon Edwards is inviting local agencies to join this celebration.  Bring your agency information and hand-outs.  Tables are available, let the Senior Center know in advance if you need one.  Call ASAP if you plan to participate so you can be listed on the flyers and in the newspaper ad.  Questions? Ladies from several churches have started a Prayer Shawl Group. The purpose of this gathering is to knit and crochet prayer shawls, baby blankets and other items for donation to Hospice. They are meeting at Sparta Presbyterian Church in the Fellowship Hall on Mondays. If you are interested in participating, please contact Anne Mackey, 657-8205, or Linda Young, 372-1551. The prayer shawls are made with love and prayers and are gifts, hoping those who are ill will feel comfort and solace as they wear it.

HELP DECIDE HOSPITAL'S FUTURE: This may be one of the most important meetings in the county's history. Monday, April 23, Alleghany Memorial Hospital will host a public forum in the Courtroom of the Alleghany County Courthouse beginning at 5:30p. This is your chance to learn more about what it will take to keep our hospital open and serving the community.

Evangelist Jonathan Lotz continues a revival at First Baptist Church in Sparta through Wednesday evening. Lotz is the grandson of probably the best known evangelist, Billy Graham. Lotz is a graduate of Baylor University and worked as an accounts manager for an office supply company before he began working for, and traveling with, the Billy Graham Evangelical Association. He has spoken at Christian events throughout the world, but has generally been a secondary speaker rather than the featured evangelist.

ROLL OUT THE WELCOME MAT FOR DANCERS: Sparta will host MISSION POSSIBLE TALENT COMPETITION, a multi-county dance competition organized by the Dance Place this Saturday in the Alleghany Community Auditorium (Sparta School Auditorium to old timers) from 10a-6p. This community set a high standard for hospitality with the Junior Olympic Volleyball competition and this is another opportunity to put on our best face. These folks will be in our restaurants, motel and shops. We treat them good and we may see them return for a visit later in the season.


BUSINESS AFTER HOURS will be hosted by the Alleghany Wellness Center Thursday, April 12, 5-7p. Meet their newest staff member, Program Coordinator Garrett Bare. An Alleghany native, he graduated from Lenoir-Rhyne University in Hickory and previously worked at Green Labs pharmaceuticals in Lenoir, NC. Those of you who know Garrett, know he's always been involved in sports and fitness. Whether you are a member or not, Garrett and General Manager Drew Edwards are  pulling out the stops to showcase their facility and programs: 5-5:30p is networking and a chance to purchase raffle tickets for free memberships and classes. 5:30-6p tour of facility and new website, pool plans -- which includes some  surprises. 6-6:30p observe boot camp aerobics class (This is the ultimate workout. ALLEGHANY NEWS GOES DIGITAL: If you missed the story, The Alleghany News now offers a complete copy of the weekly online. You can flip through a read the stories and see the ads. It even makes the sound of pages flipping over when you turn a page. Out of town or out of the country, you can catch the local news on any computer with an Internet connect, that is if you are a subscriber. For the next week, everyone gets to test drive the online model at no charge. Afterwards print subscribers can have access to the online edition. Out of towners pay an online subscription price. HELP BICYCLE PATHWAYS PLANNING: High Country Council of Governments is developing a bike plan for Yancey, Mitchell, Avery, Watauga, Ashe, Alleghany, and Wilkes counties.  The Plan is intended to improve safety, access, and mobility for cyclists by developing a network of designated routes that connect municipalities and other major destinations in the region.  The survey consists of 23 questions, and is geared towards cyclists and non-cyclists alike and will be available until May 4. The Family Resource Center is hosting Darkness to Light, Stewards of Children Training, a special program to recognize and prevent child abuse. This is a must program for anyone who wants to be trained how and when to report abuse. Training is approved for 3 hours of instructional credit.

Meeting of Minds: Join host Dudley Carpenter and four luminaries from the past: Emily Dickens, Attila the Hun, Galileo, and Charles Darwin for a thought-provoking discussion of timeless issues at 7p in the Clubhouse at River Country Estates. This Readers' Theatre production is free to the public but donations are appreciated. And if you haven't been out to the River Country Clubhouse, this is an opportunity to see one of the premier gathering venues in the county. (Yes, that's me in the photo playing Darwin. I'll be looking for you in the audience.) The show is repeated at the Alleghany Library on Friday.

Volunteer to Get the Parkway in Shape: Meet at 10a with other volunteers at the Bluffs Coffeeshop (sorry, it's not open this season) parking lot for a  Northern Highlands Chapter of Friends of the Blue Ridge Parkway sponsored clean up to get the Parkway in shape for the season. Come one and all – just bring lunch, gloves, rakes, shovels, and small hand tools. Water and snacks will be provided. Depending on the number who turn out, clean up should be complete by 2-3p. The rain date is May 5. Doughton Park campgrounds and picnic area and the picnic area in Cumberland Knob are the areas where we’ll be working. Questions: Call Joyce Speas at 336-601-6118.
