BROC helps beat the winter cold
The Blue Ridge Opportunity Commission is providing a weatherization program for local homes as part of the federal stimulus program. This is a win-win for everyone involved. It lowers your heating bills, increases the value of your home and means jobs and spending in the local economy. There are guidelines that must be met (income maximums or a SSI or TANF eligible family member). Call the local BROC office at 336-372-7284 to learn more. If you don't qualify, tell your neighbors. This helps your neighbor and the local community.

Hospice Tree of Lights honors the departed
The annual Hospice Tree of Lights program, honoring and remembering family and friends that have passed away in the past year, is this Tuesday, Dec. 8, at 6p at the Hospice Office on Doughton Street just down from First Community Bank. Support Hospice by placing a light on the tree in memory of their passing for $5. Refreshments follow. 336-372-8010

Community Advent Service & Lunch
Sparta United Methodist Church is hosting the community Advent service this Wednesday, Dec. 9, and the following Wednesday, at 12 noon. The brief service given by one of the participating members of the Ministerium (county ministerial association) is followed by a light lunch in the fellowship hall. Everyone is invited. 336-372-4441

Innovative Occasions ribbon cutting, open house
Plan to drop in for Innovative Occasions Event Planning and Limousine Service Wednesday, Dec. 9, between 2p and 5p. The Chamber will be cutting the ribbon on their new shop at 3p. Learn about and see the resources Innovative Occasions has to make your event special. Fresh-cut flowers will highlight their floral service. Rental linens and decorations will be displayed. Their limo will be at the event and there will be information on area resources to round out special activities. Gadabout Catering will be providing food. Door prizes for some lucky participant. Mission Meal at Sparta Methodist
The public is invited to the 11a worship service and to remain for the noon Second Sunday Mission Meal, Dec. 13. There is no charge for this opportunity to break bread and fellowship together, but donations are appreciated and benefit a special mission project. \336-372-4441

Highland Camerata Christmas Concerts
This local North Carolina-Virginia choral group will perform Schubert’s soaring “Mass in G.” The program will also include a collection of carols arranged by Stephen Paulus as well as some Old English and French carols. In addition to the usual piano accompaniment, the program will feature sections for an oboist, flutist and harpist. A separate marimba performance will be presented near intermission. WCC presents 12 Keys to a Successful Event
The small-business department of Wilkes Community College is presenting a no cost class on event management Thursday, Dec. 10, 1-4p. The Event Coach presents 12 Keys to a Successful Event, a program open to church groups, non-profits, for-profits, anyone who manages an event and wants to learn to do it better, in the Oral History Room of the Library in Alumni Hall at WCC in Wilkesboro.
