MORE SNOW!
March has certainly come in like a lion. Hopefully it will go out like a lamb. If weather conditions are questionable, first call the number listed with events to make sure that they have not been rescheduled.

VIDEOS SHOW OFF ALLEGHANY COUNTY
Check our FACEBOOK page for three High Country videos that show off local businesses. Two videos are about Choose and Cut and feature Little Grandfather Mountain Christmas Tree Farm and the third is about area musical traditions and features the Alleghany Jubilee. Just click on the white arrow in the blue button to view. The videos were shot for the state's tourism website VisitNC.com/highcountry.

ALLEGHANY CELEBRATES QUILT MONTH
Alleghany Quilters Guild is going all out to celebrate March as national quilt month. There will be month-long quilt displays at the Alleghany Library and in the Blue Ridge Business Development Center atrium. Also in the atrium, special activities include: "Meet the Quilters" reception Thursday, March 11, at 10a; two "Old-Fashion Quilting Bees" Monday, March 15, and March 29 at 3p; and a "Log Cabin Quilting Class" Thursday, March 18, from 10a-2p (call 336-372-5838 for a list of supplies).


WEDNESDAY LENTEN SERVICE CANCELED
The March 3 Community Lenten Service at Sparta United Methodist Church is canceled because of road conditions following Tuesday's snow. See information on next Wednesday's listing below.

INTO THE TWILIGHT AUTHOR BOOK SIGNING
Annis Jackson, author of Into the Twilight: The True Origins of Abe Lincoln will be at Books 'N Friends Saturday, March 6, from 12n-3p for a book signing and sale. Jackson's book examines evidence that Lincoln was actually born in North Carolina. Half of the book's sale proceeds go to the Friends of the Library. Snow date: April 3. 336-372-5155

DANCING WITH THE ALLEGHANY STARS
We know Alleghany can flatfoot and we know it can clog, but can our couples kick up their heels? This first-of-its-kind fund raiser for the Educational Foundation will answer that question as some of the county's most noteworthy couples compete on the dance floor to be the local version of Fred Astaire and Ginger Rodgers Saturday, March 6. It's only $35 per person to see Jeff and Reba Cox, Bryan and Terry Edwards, George and Lauren White, Carol and Bob Black, Brett and Patsy Jarrett, David and Sherry Edwards, John and Angelia Miller and Rocky and Tammy Proffit dance their way into local lore (do you really want to miss this?). Denise Kimry of the Dance Place is choreographing the dance routines and promises an entertaining show. It all begins at 7p at the Silver Dollar Music Park. Traditional music favorites Wayne Henderson and Helen White open for the dancers. Hors oeuvres available. Beer and wine are available for purchase. NC REAL-ENTREPRENEURSHIP CLASSES
The NC Real program to teach entrepreneurs the ins and outs of creating a business plan and getting a new business off the ground right starts Monday, March 8, at the Alleghany Campus of Wilkes Community College, 6-9p, and runs for the following 3 Mondays. PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOP AND RECEPTION
The Northwest Regional Library (of which the Alleghany Library is a branch) will wrap up its regional photo contest with a photography workshop followed by an awards reception Tuesday, March 9, in the Stone Memorial Library in Mt. Airy. The workshop is at 5:30p and the awards reception at 7p. Both events are free and open to the public. 336-835-2270

COMMUNITY LENTEN SERVICE
Sparta United Methodist Church is hosting the Community Lenten Services.
Rev. Bob Mathias of Sparta Presbyterian Church will present the message on Wednesday, March 10, at noon, following by a light lunch at 12:30 in the fellowship hall. Coming Lenten pastors are Rev. ACT READERS THEATER DOUBLE FEATURE
Alleghany Community Theatre will present a double feature Readers Theatre production entitled, “Marriage: For Better…and Worse”, directed by Kate Cosner, is made up of two different one-act plays, “Kentucky Marriage Proposal” by Anton Chekhov (adapted by Alice H. Houstle) and “Reduced for Quick Sale” by Kent R. Brown. The first performance is Thursday, March 11 at 7p at Alleghany Senior Center, 85 East Whitehead Street, Sparta. CENSUS JOBS AVAILABLE
Every 10 years, our government counts the number of Americans and the 2010 count will begin shortly. Census workers are needed for the local effort. CAMP SUNSHINE APPLICATIONS ACCEPTED
High Country Hospice Camp Sunshine, a free 3-day grief camp for children 5-12, is now accepting applications for campers, volunteers and counselors. Our foyer is always open and a brochure is always available.
>> Driving Loops: Brochures for three driving loops of the Alleghany countryside are available at the Alleghany Chamber of Commerce and Visitors' Center. Each loop is a about a leisurely hour's drive and includes information on historic points along the way. The Chamber office is in the rock building with the green awning (58 South Main St., Sparta). Our foyer is always open and a brochure is always available.
