ALLEGHANY CELEBRATES QUILT MONTH
Alleghany Quilters Guild is going all out to celebrate March as national quilt month. There will be month-long quilt displays at the Alleghany Library and in the Blue Ridge Business Development Center atrium. Also in the atrium, special activities include: "Meet the Quilters" reception Thursday, March 11, at 10a; two "Old-Fashion Quilting Bees" Monday, March 15, and March 29 at 3p; and a "Log Cabin Quilting Class" Thursday, March 18, from 10a-2p (call 336-372-5838 for a list of supplies).


COMMUNITY LENTEN SERVICE
Sparta United Methodist Church is hosting the Community Lenten Services.
Rev. Bob Mathias of Sparta Presbyterian Church will present the message on Wednesday, March 10, at noon, following by a light lunch at 12:30 in the fellowship hall. Coming Lenten pastors are Rev. ACT READERS THEATER DOUBLE FEATURE
Alleghany Community Theatre will present a double feature Readers Theatre production entitled, “Marriage: For Better…and Worse”, directed by Kate Cosner, is made up of two different one-act plays, “Kentucky Marriage Proposal” by Anton Chekhov (adapted by Alice H. Houstle) and “Reduced for Quick Sale” by Kent R. Brown. The first performance is Thursday, March 11 at 7p at Alleghany Senior Center, 85 East Whitehead Street, Sparta. PARK PROGRAM ON ANIMAL TRACKS

SECOND SUNDAY MEALS MARCH 14
Sparta United Methodist Church serves their second-Sunday Mission Meal in the fellowship hall following the 11a worship service. The public is invited to worship and stay for the meal. There is no charge, but donations are appreciated and go to a worthy cause.

CENSUS JOBS AVAILABLE
Every 10 years, our government counts the number of Americans and the 2010 count will begin shortly. Census jobs are going begging in Alleghany County. >> Crouse House Pickers: Local blue grass and old time musicians jam each Monday, 2 blocks north of the Courthouse at the Crouse House in Crouse Park, beginning at 6p. Come and play or just listen. No charge, but a donation is appreciated. 372-5473
>> Silver Dollar Music Park Line dance lessons every Monday 6-8:30p. Supper served at 6p and lessons at 7p. Get both for $12; just a lesson or just a meal for $7. 336-372-6874

>> Barn Quilt Trails: Barns and other structures throughout Alleghany County are adorned with large squares illustrating quilt patterns and add interest to a driving tour of the countryside. Drop by the Alleghany Chamber of Commerce and Visitors' Center for a brochure. We are in the rock building with the green awning (58 South Main St., Sparta). Our foyer is always open and a brochure is always available.
>> Driving Loops: Brochures for three driving loops of the Alleghany countryside are available at the Alleghany Chamber of Commerce and Visitors' Center. Each loop is a about a leisurely hour's drive and includes information on historic points along the way. The Chamber office is in the rock building with the green awning (58 South Main St., Sparta). Our foyer is always open and a brochure is always available.
