HELP DECIDE HOSPITAL'S FUTURE: This may be one of the most important meetings in the county's history. Monday, April 23, Alleghany Memorial Hospital will host a public forum in the Courtroom of the Alleghany County Courthouse beginning at 5:30p. This is your chance to learn more about what it will take to keep our hospital open and serving the community.

CORNETTES WIN $250! Arville and Judy Cornette were the winners of $250 and a certificate for a free tax return next year. Mr. Cornette's name was drawn  from contest entry form entered in the H&R Block's Don't Wait Until It's Too Late Contest. Entries were taken from April 2 to April 11, 2012. CANOE CAMP FOR YOUR YOUNGSTER: Riverside Canoeing is again offering weekly canoe camps beginning June 18 and continuing through the summer. Plan now to introduce you son or daughter to the wonders of the New River and teach them the art of river navigation. Camp is held daily from 9a- 5p, Monday through Friday.  Participants learn how to paddle canoes and kayak, spending a majority of their day on the river.  Along with basic paddling techniques, campers learn how to handle a boat in many situations on the river, water and boating safety, and learn about the ecology and dynamics of the New River from New River State Park rangers and staff from the National Committee for the New River. At the end of the week, campers will be joined by their families for a paddling trip on the river so that they can demonstrate their new skills, followed by a family BBQ.  Maximum number of participants is 8.

LEARN WATER AEROBICS: River Country Estates is offering water aerobics to non-members at the Clubhouse for $5 per class or six classes for $25 at 5p each Monday and Thursday. Learn the Signs of Spring from a New River Park Ranger.


Evangelist Jonathan Lotz continues a revival at First Baptist Church in Sparta through Wednesday evening. Lotz is the grandson of probably the best known evangelist, Billy Graham. Lotz is a graduate of Baylor University and worked as an accounts manager for an office supply company before he began working for, and traveling with, the Billy Graham Evangelical Association. He has spoken at Christian events throughout the world, but has generally been a secondary speaker rather than the featured evangelist.

Our foyer is always open and a brochure is always available.
>> Driving Loops: Brochures for three driving loops of the Alleghany countryside are available at the Alleghany Chamber of Commerce and Visitors' Center. Each loop is about a leisurely hour's drive and includes information on historic points along the way. The Chamber office is in the rock building with the green awning (58 South Main Street, Sparta). Our foyer is always open and a brochure is always available.
