SELECT AUCTION ITEMS AT AWARDS BANQUET: Friday, Nov. 4, you’re invited to the Alleghany Chamber of Commerce’s annual Awards Banquet/Auction at the Olde Beau Golf Club. The social hour begins at 6:30 p.m., followed by a meal and program at 7:30. The Chamber Board of Directors has chosen four individuals and groups to be honored: The Sparta Lions Club, River Rock Grill and Family Entertainment Center, George White and Sandy Rost. Tickets are $35 and available at the Chamber and from Chamber Board members. The evening’s menu is salad, petite sirloin and honey-glazed salmon, asparagus with roasted red pepper, herb roasted red potatoes, bread, and pumpkin cheesecake for dessert. We always have a great time. If you wait too long, all the tickets may be gone. 336-372-5473

We have three select auction items for the event: a Potting Bench, hand-crafted by John Brady; a hand-crated table from Designs in Wood; and a Stack-On GC-908 Gun Safe (where else in Alleghany can you get a gun safe with no shipping charges). These items are all new (there is a dent in the safe). If you or your business has an item or two to add, I'd really like to hold the auction to no more than 5 items. Questions? Call 336-372-5473 or 336-200-2468 (cell).

21 WIRELESS CUSTOMER APPRECIATION GREAT DEALS: Drop by 21 Wireless in Trojan Village Shopping Center this Saturday and Sunday for their Customer Appreciation Celebration and great deals on cell and smart phones. Free activation and buy one get half off deals. $20 off prepaid phone and one month free service. Food, freebies and prizes, 10a-4p both days. 336-372-CELL (2355)

TRUNKS NEEDED FOR HALLOWEEN BASH: Every Halloween Crouse Park is host to the biggest local party of the year. Kids of all ages converge to collect some sweets. There are games, a costume contest and more. But at the center of the entire affair is trunk 'n treating: Kids passing by the rear of decorated vehicles with their trunk or hatch opened or their pickup bed exposed and helping themselves to some of the candy there. There's a prize for the best decorated vehicle. We need adults and their vehicles. You are key to our success. All you need to do is just show up at Crouse Park on Monday, Oct. 31, between 4:20 and 4:40 p.m. with your vehicle in fine Halloween attire and candy in the back. We can help resupply your candy. It all depends on you. 336-372-5473

NEW MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: B & D VARIETY STORE: This new business in the old Sheets Jewelry/Oldies But Goodies location is hard to describe because of the unusual variety. They have nicked and scratched (but otherwise new) tables for ridiculously low prices, stuffed couches and chairs priced almost as low, Christmas and other occasion cards, holiday decorations and even motorized chairs to help the disabled get around like those so frequently advertised on TV. And I'm sure I left something out. If you think I'm fooling, drop by 21 North Main St., and see for yourself. 336-657-1785

BUSINESSES ASKED TO PARTICIPATE IN SKILLS' SURVEY: Ricky Roten, Business Services Representative for the JobLink centers in Alleghany, Ashe and Wilkes County, 336-651-2540 ext.2550 Ricky.Roten@wilkescc.edu, has asked that business owners and managers please take online survey so that Alleghany County is represented. "A skills survey was conducted in parts of North Carolina back in 2007, it was so popular that other parts of the country used the survey as a model to determine skills gaps in their workforce and plan training curriculums accordingly. I’m happy to report that the new 2012 Skills Survey for North Carolina Employers has been launched locally and your business can participate in this short 10 question survey online at: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/CKVMWLN" Roten said. Be sure to participate and help Alleghany County have a voice in the region.

GET ON THE EVERGREEN TRAIL: The choose and cut farms of the Alleghany Christmas Tree Association were awarded a $30,000 grant to promote Choose and Cut. This is not a Chamber project, but we don't have $30,000 to promote the county for the entire year. They are using the money to steer traffic to EvergreenTrailChristmasFarms.com. With that much money focused on that site, you may want to advertise. And advertising is very reasonable. (Check in-season ads on page 2.) For details, call Amy Lucas or Teresa Herman at 336-372-5597.

QUICK EDITORIAL: We had a small but enthusiastic group for our first Chamber Quarterly Member Meeting Monday in the Blue Ridge Electric Conference Room. If you missed, we'll hold another in January. It's a time for us to speak face-to-face and exchange ideas. The meeting opened with a brief PowerPoint presentation on the impact of tourism on the county.

From time to time someone asks me what will it take for Sparta and Alleghany County to become a tourism community. The answer, as the PowerPoint illustrates, we are a tourism community as much as we are a Christmas tree community or cattle county. I hear the complaint a tourism business can only make money 8 months out of the year. Well that's twice the Christmas tree season. And if we put our heads together, we could probably come up with some ways to get folks up the mountain during the dead of winter. The question that needs asking and answering is: How can we better benefit from being a tourism community. I'm open to suggestions. I invite you to view the PowerPoint. Don't worry if you don't have PowerPoint software. It's in pdf format. ~ Bob Bamberg
