Happy New Year!

Ring in the New at the Dollar
The Silver Dollar Music Park has big plans for New Year's eve that includes supper, a great band, breakfast and favors! The band is Four Wheel Drive and the music is live and loud rock and roll. It starts at 8p. The breakfast is full of your favorite breakfast foods and will be served shortly after midnight. Supper is served around 6 pm until 8:30. Hospice Tree of Lights honors the departed
The annual Hospice Tree of Lights program, honoring and remembering family and friends that have passed away in the past year, is this Tuesday, Dec. 8, at 6p at the Hospice Office on Doughton Street just down from First Community Bank. Support Hospice by placing a light on the tree in memory of their passing for $5. Refreshments follow. 336-372-8010

Community Advent Service & Lunch

No Brief next week
For the first time ever, I'm spending Thanksgiving with my grandchildren in warm Florida. They usually come to the mountains for the holiday (and bring their parents with them) but this year, those plans did not work out. There will be no Briefing next week. Have a Happy Thanksgiving (I'll be thinking of you while I'm strolling the beach in shorts and sandals).

The Choose & Cut fields open
Several fields have opened and every other field will be open by Thanksgiving weekend to permit you to choose your holiday tree and they will cut, bale and attach it to your roof for a safe ride home.

Suicide Survivors' Day program
The Alleghany County Suicide Prevention Committee is hosting the National Survivors of Suicide Day broadcast at the Blue Ridge Business Development Center, Saturday, Nov. 21, 11:30a-3:30p. Lunch will be provided in the day room. The broadcast will be shown in the conference room. A discussion follows. The public is cordially invited to attend. This day and this program is of special significance to individuals who have lost family members and friends to suicide. Christmas lights come on Friday at 6p
Lights have been added to several buildings in old downtown since last Christmas. Friday, Nov. 27, those lights and the lights on the Courthouse lawn including the community tree donated by Randal and Kimberly Sides will be ceremonially turned on at 6p. There will be carolers on the street and most of the stores will remain open for shoppers until 7p. A number of the merchants have decorated windows. Come see how nice this town can look for the holidays.


Hospice offering pictures with Santa
Santa will be welcoming kids young and less young for photos at Sparta's Hospice office, 81 West Doughton St. (below First Community Bank) Saturday, Nov. 28, from 9a-12noon. Pictures are only $5 and benefit Hospice. Come get you picture made and stay for the big parade at 2p.


Saturday buffet at Sparta Restaurant
Sparta Restaurant is offering a special Saturday lunch buffet beginning at 11a Saturday, Nov. 28, that includes the salad bar, hot bar and soup for just $5.95. Christmas Parade at 2p
The annual Christmas Parade winds south along Main Street beginning at 2p at Sparta School on Saturday, Nov. 28. The AHS Band will offer a brief concert around 3p following the parade and Santa will be greeting youngsters. The theme is Christmas Then and Now in honor of the Sesqucentinnial. Call 336-372-6135 to register or for information. Late entries should arrive early (1 p) at the parking lot on the north side of the Sparta School Auditorium.

Singing Christmas Tree at First Baptist
This annual Christmas tradition will be offered Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 4-6, at 7p. No admission is charged, but reservations are required to guarantee seats. Call 336-372-8446 for information and reservations.

Sesquicentennial Celebration finale
The 150th Anniversary year of celebration comes to a close Friday, Dec. 4, 5-7p, with a reception and recognition in the Blue Ridge Electric Community Room, 5-7p. Light refreshment provided. Come relive the good times of 2009. RSVP with number attending by email or by calling 336-372-3002.

Libary offers special programs
during Disabilities Awareness month
The Alleghany Library will show a documentary film, "A New Kind of Listening" Tuesday (tonight), Oct. 27, at 7p. It chronicles the work of a community theater group to create an original production with a cast that includes individuals with disabilities. Through their work together, Chris, a young man with cerebral palsy who was mislabeled profoundly mentally retarded because he could not speak, breaks through into stunning self-expression. Together the theater group proves that a small community arts project has the power to transform lives.

A Disability Awareness Workshop will be presented by Polly Medlicott Wednesday, Oct. 28, at the Alleghany County Library, as a follow-up to the above documentary. Space is limited, so pre-registration is required for the workshop.336-372-5573


Halloween happening at Crouse Park
There'll be a crowd of kids at the park for the big Halloween Celebration Saturday, Oct. 31, 5-7p. Planned activities include a costume contest beginning at 6p, trunk or treating, food and a bounce house. Adults, you can participate. Become a trunk of treater: Place candy in your car trunk, pickup bed or in the back of our SUV or station wagon for kids to trick or treat. Most folks decorate their "trunk" in the Halloween spirit. Chamber hands out awards
at Annual Meeting at Olde Beau
The Chamber recognized the following at their Annual Meeting, Saturday, Oct. 10, at Olde Beau: Businessman of the Year, Clint Bedsaul; Business of the Year, NAPCO; Agricultural Award, Alleghany Christmas Tree Association; Lifetime Achievement Award in memory of Tom Richardson; Heritage Award to Ernest and Agnes Joines; Board Members of the Year, John Kilmartin and John Spicer; and retiring board members Everett Dukes and Barbara Lucier. Locals recognized for 150th efforts
by NC Society of Historians
Alleghany County was well represented at the North Carolina Society of Historians award ceremony Oct. 10. Ernest Joines was named Music Historian of the Year for his 150th anniversary 4-CD compilation of performances by Alleghany musicians. Imaging Specialists received a Garland P. Stout publishers award and a President's Award for the broad selection of historical items created for the sesquacentinial (see below for information about owning some of this memorabilia). 2010 SPARTA Magazine highlights
Blue Ridge Parkway 75th Anniversary

Blue Ridge Parkway construction began Sept. 11, 1935, at Cumberland Knob in Alleghany County. This is OUR National Park. The coming 2010 issue of the SPARTA Magazine will tell the Blue Ridge Parkway's story and Alleghany County's unique contribution to that story. Make sure your listing is as you wish. Halloween call for Trunk or Treaters
What is trunk or treat? You place candy in your car trunk, pickup bed or in the back of our SUV or station wagon for kids to trick or treat. Most folks decorate their "trunk" in the Halloween spirit. Trunk or Treaters are invited to Crouse Park Saturday, Oct. 31, 5-7p, to line up and welcome the large crowd of costumed youngsters expected to attend. Business, you have two options. You can bring a trunk-or-treat vehicle. Or you can donate a give-away item for the Merchants Wagon. Or you can make a small donation to help with the costume contest prizes. 150th Memorabilia for gifts, donation
Because of the slow economy, there is still 150th Anniversary memorabilia available for sale -- T-shirts, puzzles, CDs of local musicians, and photo albums. These would make great gifts that would preserve the memories of our 150th year. The puzzles are great for teaching the very young good eye-hand coordination as well as help them learn more about the county. They are an also a good way to engage older residents of nursing homes and other care facilities. Citizens, businesses and non-profits are encouraged to support the 150th effort to meet fund-raising goals and purchase these as gifts or donations to schools and care facilities. Promote your business to travelers
If you have a business that is of interest to travelers, the new Northwest North Carolina Welcome Center, located along US 421 in North Wilkesboro, is looking for brochures to distribute to travelers. If you have a brochure for your B&B, vacation rental or whatever, this seems like a no-brainer. There's no charge but there are some restrictions and requirements. Follow this link to learn more. Tour to National D-Day Memorial in Bedford
H&R Tours will host a tour of this Bedford landmark on Oct. 31. Participants will leave at 8a from the Alleghany Senior Center and return around 7p that evening. The cost is $60 which includes lunch, motor coach transportation and entry into the memorial. Registration and payment must be completed by Oct. 16.
