CHRISTMAS CRAFT FAIR THIS SATURDAY: What better place to find that special one-of-a-kind gift for someone on your shopping list or something special for yourself. Some 28 vendors will be on display at this annual holiday event in the Black Building at the County Fairgrounds from 9a to 4:30p. While you are out, why not stop by one of our Choose and Cut farms and pick out a special tree for your Christmas.

NEW MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: North Carolina Mountain Retreat on Little River. The Chamber welcomes Michael and Dr. Mary Emma Beres' Mountain Retreat on Little River. If you are looking for a quiet cozy place to spend your long-awaited, much-needed vacation, this secluded little home-away-from-home is sure to please.  From the spacious deck or the built-in sunroom, you will be able to enjoy the views no matter what the weather! Features include: six acres of beautiful waterfront property with more than 600 feet of river frontage, two bedrooms, fireplace (wood provided), central heat and air, ceiling fans in every room, phone service, washer/dryer, sunroom, wrap around deck, DVD player, and more. This could be a great place for Christmas guests and friends seeking a mountain getaway. Check it out on their website.

AHGS NEWSLETTER FEATURES HARVEST & MORE: I found the recent issue of the Alleghany Historical-Genealogical Society Newsletter particularly colorful and interesting. The front highlights Harvest and Holidays exhibit in the Museum from now to the end of the year. Inside is a brief summary of recent Society programs, including a program on ham radio and the famous Siamese Twins Chang and Eng Bunker of Wilkes County. My favorite was a retrospective on Lou Reid Landreth who passed away last May. She was a very interesting woman who led the kind of challenging life more common in the 21st century, but quite unusual for the mid-20th century. She's one person I wish I had taken the time to know better. If you are not a AHGS member, the newsletter is available online. Since membership is only $10 a year, why not become a member and have it mailed to your home?

IT'S NOT TO LATE FOR CHICKEN FOR CHRISTMAS! Leave the holiday cooking to the folks at the Laurel Ridge Moravian Camp and enjoy homemade Moravian chicken pie with everyone you love this season! Each Moravian chicken pie and an accompanying container of gravy is just $15. It serves up eight generous slices. But you better hurry. Place your order by December 5 and pick up on December 10, 11a- 5p. To place your order, please call the Laurel Ridge office at 336-359-2951 or email laurel_ridge@skybest.com. If the above pickup time is not convenient, call to arrange an alternate time.

SANTA WILL BE AT TROJAN VILLAGE during the days leading up to Christmas in Santa Land at the Village Emporium. (And you thought he was hanging out at the North Pole.) While you are there, check out the new shipment of furniture, the homemade crafts upstairs as well as the offerings in all the stores at Trojan Village Shopping Center. Check his schedule and then grab your youngsters for a traditional Christmas treat.

COME TO THE MOVIES! River Country Estates is showing holiday classic movies -- 3 each Sunday -- plus popcorn, drink and candy for one low price of $5. Check out what's playing and make plans to grab your family for cinema Sunday.

And that's not all, through Sunday, Dec. 4 they are conducting a toy drive to benefit the Alleghany Partnership for Children. During these hard economic times there may be children in Alleghany County that will have nothing for Christmas. Don't let that happen. Please bring an unwrapped toy suitable for a child 5 years of age or younger to the clubhouse and help bring joy to a child. Call 359-2585 or the Partnership 372-2846 for details.

Sunday, December 18, after the movies a "Seasons Greetings" Community Pot Luck Dinner get together is planned. Bring your favorite covered dish and join in an evening of fun, food and fellowship.  More information to come.

Keep up with the goings on at the clubhouse and view pictures of past events by visiting them on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/pages/The-Clubhouse-at-River-Country-Estates/164410103650261
