HURRY TO GEM VALLEY: If you're hoping to do any more prospecting this year, you better hurry over to the Gem Valley, the area's gem mining headquarters. Saturday, Oct. 16, is their last day this season. They are open 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and are located 2.5 miles off NC 88 on Little Peak Creek Road.
