ARTISTS' SPOTLIGHT: MOUNTAIN ART ADVENTURE
Ruth and I had a wonderful day visiting some of the studios participating in the NC Mountain Arts Adventure studio tour. Pictures are posted on the Chamber's Facebook page.
I didn't get to even half the studios, but we had such a good time visiting with the artists/friends and admiring their art, there was not time. I hope to get to the rest of you during the fall tour.

I know I took more photos of Ronnie Hughes, glass sculpturer, but I was fascinated. Growing up in my childhood hometown, the Bamberg boys were known for doing interesting things with fire. I don't ever recall my brother being punished when his experiments with gun powder blew a hole in the carport's concrete floor. Maybe by then he was just too big to spank. But I don't recall him experimenting with fire again, maybe it scared him more than my parents. He moved on chemistry. He recently retired from a career with a major pharmaceutical company.

Kudos to the artists we visited for a great effort. I'm sure the studios we missed were just as good. Best of all, we get a chance to visit them Oct. 15-17.

Each week we spotlight Chamber members. To be featured, send a 50-word description to director@sparta-nc.com. I'll feature them in the order received.

I'm experimenting with a new format. My information on calendared events is briefer but I've included links to the event listing on the Chamber's Web Page. I know that's not helpful for those of you who tell me you print the Briefing and post it at work and other locations, but it helps keep my time involved with the Briefing more manageable. CLICK THE LINKS FOR MORE INFO. Feel free to email me with comments.

SUNDAY, JUNE 20
Bid Farewell to the Davis Bourne Inn:
I'm sad to report that Sunday brunch at the Journey's End Restaurant at the Davis Bourne will be the last meal served by Taphne Taylor and her staff. The bed and breakfast rooms close the end of the week. A meal at the Davis Bourne Inn promised a menu selection rare for our community, good service and an air of gentility that has been lost to most of us in our race-here, race-there wired-up lives. From the emails and conversations I've had with Ms. Taylor, I know how hard she has worked. She may be the hardest working woman in Virginia and North Carolina. It is sad. Plan to be there to wish everyone well and enjoy it one last time. 11a-2p. Reservations always appreciated. 276-773-9384

Salamander Ramble: Be prepared to get muddy in this program at New River State Park. 2p

I've been to Cascade Highlands programs and they are first class. Little or no travel packaging is done in Alleghany. TIME TO REGISTER IS SHORT. THIS IS LOW HANGING FRUIT. DON'T PASS THIS UP. The $20 registration includes lunch. If you can't come all day, come just for the morning. 336-401-8393 mccannb@co.surry.nc.us
