The Chamber of Commerce Calendaring Meeting will be held on Wed., Feb. 1, at 5:15 p.m. in the conference room of the Alleghany Inn. Every organization in the community that holds a public event or fundraiser is invited to come and post their activity on the 2012 calendar. The meeting is an attempt to create as complete a calendar as possible for the year and to spot possible conflicting events in time for scheduling changes. Please bring as much information on the event that is currently available. All events will be posted on the Chamber’s calendar at www.Sparta-nc.com. The more complete the information, the fewer times the Chamber will have to update that notice. Participants will post their event on a large calendar and fill out a community event form with available details. It should take no more than 30 minutes. EDWARDS TAKES WELLNESS POST: Drew Edwards has been named as new Alleghany Wellness Center general manager and has been on the job since Jan. 18, The son of Carlton and Diane Edwards, Ennice, he is an ASU graduate in recreation management. Previously he worked for High Council of Governments. He replaces Ted Orton and interim manager Ed Choplin. Drew is no stranger to the Wellness Center. He's been holding Boot Camps since November. "We re looking to expand the program base," Edwards said, "reach out in the county and help the health of the community."

QUICK EDITORIAL: I was in the CableVision office to drop off the Volleyball banner for them to hang -- all the banners hung over the street are done at no charge by George or a CableVision employee -- and I found owner George Sheets hunkered over a list of his channel offerings and charges. He explained that he used to be able to re-broadcast the so-called "free" channels that locals can receive with an antenna at no cost. That has changed. While Alleghany CableVision has always paid a per subscriber fee for most cable channels, e.g. CNN, TNT, CMT, in the last few years the surrounding local stations are demanding similar payments. "Free TV is not free anymore," George said. He explained that he dickers with each station for the lowest rate, but now about half of what his subscribers pay goes straight to the channel providers.

There was a time when the Cable Industry was regulated and the Sparta Town Council had some say in cable rates. Whether the council could have halted increased charges to the cable companies is not clear. But what is clear is that cable deregulation has left us with capitalism at its purest and every broadcaster is out for every penny available. With a small, local cable provider squeezed between charges from larger broadcasters and competition from national satellite services, profits are hard to come by. It's another example of small, local business being pushed aside by bigger players in the industry.

"I am at a loss to know how to handle all the increases and keep our rate at a reasonable cost," Sheets lamented. "I appreciate all our customers who have stuck with us while we are working hard to survive. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated."

Bill Graham's passing: I sent out a notice about Bill Graham's funeral last week that said nothing would be in this week's Alleghany News about his passing. I meant to say that since he died on a Wednesday nothing was in the previous week's issue. I also said he died of cancer. I've been informed that was not correct. These are the kind of mistakes I make when I'm in hurry. I just wanted to set the record straight. It was a very nice celebration of the life of an interested fellow citizen.

ALTERNATIVE MEDICINE FINDS NEW HOME: Dr. Pablo De Vincenzo and Dr. Sandra Mora invite the public to an open house for the new offices for the Alternative Medicine Center of Sparta Tuesday, Jan. 10, from 4-6p in the Blue Business Development Center, 115 Atwood Street. This is a chance to become more acquainted with their emotional health and acupuncture services, but more than that they want it to be a time of fun and fellowship. Appetizers are being provided, but if you have a favorite recipe for a special finger food, feel free to bring and share. Dr. V also claims to be able to play the accordion. ENJOY WATER AEROBICS THIS WINTER: The River Country Estates Clubhouse is offering water aerobics twice a week. This is timely now that the Alleghany Wellness Center pool is temporarily closed while its vinyl roof is being replaced with a permanent structure. SCHOOL PSYCHOLOGIST CHARLES RUDY presented a program on suicide at Thursday's Rotary Meeting in the Alleghany Memorial Hospital Solarium. He stressed that depression, the underlying reason for most suicides, is treatable but individuals have to seek treatment. The Jan. 12 Rotary program will be the Alleghany Honor Guard, that is composed of firemen, emergency and law enforcement personnel and is open to retired military. Rotary meets every Thursday at 7a in the Alleghany Memorial Hospital Solarium and consists of a program and breakfast. Visitors are welcome. QUICK EDITORIAL: Kudos for the decorated Christmas trees in the former Teapot Museum storefront. Few things cast a shadow on downtown retail than an empty storefront, but no one hardly noticed that the old museum site was empty because of the decorated trees filling the front of the building. Hats off to the Sparta Revitalization Committee and particularly Johnnie Whitlow for spearheading this project and her helpers, Sandy Rost and Cheri Turner and, for helping decorate the front of the building. Thanks to the following farms for donating trees: Buddy and Brenda Nelson, Jeff Cannon, Homer and Bonnie Sides, Mark Pardue and Joe Edwards. VOLLEYBALL BRINGS 500 POTENTIAL CUSTOMERS UP OUR MOUNTAIN: January through March is Junior Olympics Volleyball Tournament Season and that means approximately 500 players, family and friends, and coaches will be in Sparta at Alleghany High School each Saturday for tournament play. Players from the east usually come up Friday, arriving at 8p or later. Closer teams come early Saturday. Those coming Friday have learned there are few eating places open and have taken to eating on the trip or staying down the mountain, usually in Elkin. The Chamber is making an effort to encourage these folks to trade here. They must eat and sleep here (assuming they aren't close enough to commute on Saturday). They often have two hour breaks between play on Saturday and parents and sometimes players shop (gifts, clothes, art, etc.) or seek diversions (wineries, artisan studios, etc.). We have a website, SpartaVB.com, that is part of this effort. A Twitter and Facebook page are up. We are offering listings on the site for $25 that includes your name and/or logo, address, phone, web address (if available) and a 25 word description. The money goes for a welcome banner over Main Street. I've dummeyed-up some ads under the Eat link. If you want part of the Friday night crowd, it pays to be open past 8p. NEW MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: Ciro's Pizza Italian Restaurant's name almost says it all. They offer pizzas, pasta, calzones and strombolis, but they also offer subs and sandwiches, fish and seafood, wings and even chicken quesadilla. Ciro's is so close, nextdoor in neighboring Independence, Virginia, at 430 East Main Street. Luke's Support
still Strong

There has been no let up in the efforts to support Luke Hampton and his family emotionally and financially since he broke his neck in a wrestling match Dec. 3. (Notices often feature his football jersey number 36.) He is at the Shepherd Center in Atlanta, GA, a facility specializing in spinal cord injuries. There are many ways to support him and his family with the considerable expense of his care. The simplest is to make a donation into a special account at any State Employees Credit Union. Information on other activities is available at the Alleghany Schools' website. An ACTV broadcast that features news about Luke during the first seven minutes can be found on the Vimeo video sharing website. Lastly, Luke's injury and the story of how the community is rallying to support him was the top headline story on last Wednesday's Winston-Salem Journal. It has also been picked up by the AP and is being told across the country.

NEW MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: Chilly Water Farm sits on 84 acres of land, located at 442 Laurel Glenn Church Road in Sparta. Purchased in January 2011, it is owned and operated by Kim and Sara Brown, the mother/daughter farming operation raises eggs, meat, and produce. Although not organically certified, Chilly Water Farm follows organic practices on the farm. Currently, free-range, naturally fed chickens are producing beautiful eggs. These healthy eggs can be purchased for $4.50 per dozen or $20 for five dozen. In August, 2012, Chilly Water Farm plans to begin a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) network that will consist of Dexter cattle that the farm presently raises. During the summer months, organic produce is grown and is available for purchase. Chilly Water Farm has eight miniature donkeys with the long-term plan of selling foals when "the girls" reach the adequate age for breeding. Mr. York, is the owner of York Oil, Neighbors Convenience Stores, Radio Station WIFM 100.9 in Elkin, NC, as well as Dr. Flippin's Bed and Breakfast (Pilot Mtn). Gary is a very inspiring speaker who integrates his love of photography to tell stories of people who have made a difference in his community. QUICK EDITORIAL: Thanks for the Christmas lights. I don't know whether I'm just noticing more or not, but it seems the town and county are more lit, more in the Christmas spirit. Special kudos to D.W. Miles for the always fabulously lit Trojan Village Shopping Center, to John Kilmartin for a spectacular Alleghany Inn and William Bottomley for his huge High Country Light Show at the Glade Creek Fire Department. Thanks to all the merchants and citizens for making a ride through the countryside such a show. By the way, when I come in early to work out at the Wellness Center I can't help but notice Bob Hamm's house. Not too shabby, Bob.

And speaking of Bob Hamm, HAPPY 60TH BIRTHDAY. Join everyone at B&T Automotive, 1 mile north of town on US 21, this Saturday, Dec. 17, 10a-2p for hot dogs, drinks, a bounce house for the kids and a display of some of BOB'S ANTIQUE CARS. Alleghany is Luke Strong

One of the great things about living in this small town is how it rallies around its own and this has never been more true that for Luke Hampton, son of Randy and Benita Hampton. This senior wrestler is top rated in the state and in a match last Saturday was charging an opponent and ran headlong into a wall. He broke his neck and was airlifted to Baptist Hospital and is being airlifted or has been air lifted to Shepherd Center, a spinal cord trauma facility in Atlanta. I hope what I'm telling you is accurate. I'm piecing together what I've heard and the one news report on WXII. When I opened my Facebook page this morning, every post were expressing concern about Luke, many of them headlined. "Alleghany is Luke Strong." This is the kind of injury that will create a lot of expenses not covered by insurance -- the airlift to Atlanta being one -- and efforts are ongoing to raise money to assist his family. Please consider a donation. An account has been opened at the State Employees Credit Union. There are others collecting money, but it's the only account I can be sure that all of the money will go to Luke and his family. Checks can be made out to Luke Hampton. Just approach one of the tellers and say you want to make a contribution for Luke. And keep him and the family in your thoughts and prayers.

BUSINESS AFTER HOURS CO-HOSTS BOOKFEST: THIS COMING THURSDAY, the Alleghany Historical Museum and The Sparta Store are holding a book signings and are welcoming Kay Bodeen, author of Pat Crisp - Like a Moth to a Flame; and Suzanne Mellow and Zack Hamm, author and illustrator of Stratford Oaks Tales - The Tale of Grethen as well as a Hospice representative with Meals and Memories, featuring recipes from the high country. I have read both books and while I've not kitchen-tested all the recipes, I can recommend each of them for Christmas gifts. Bodeen's book is a biography of her grandfather. For me it was a page turner. I found Crisp interesting. Kay did an excellent job of recreating his life on paper and I loved the snapshot of mountain life almost a century ago. I had just finished Lynn Salsi's The Live and Times of Ray Hicks. Both books involve the same geography and their time spans overlap. It was an interesting contrast between Crisp, a middle-class politician and merchant, and Hicks who grew up on a dirt-poor farm. Stratford Oaks Tales is a delightfully written and illustrated for children. Meals and Memories? I haven't tried all the recipes, but I can recommend Martha Allred's easy pecan pie (page 168). Drop in betweeen 3 and 6p for hors d'oeuvres, good company and stimulating company. 336-372-5473

NEW MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: Next time you are in town, drop by Sparta Produce, 35 East Doughton Street (across from the Wash Pot), and treat yourself to a lower grocery bill. Tomatoes are $1.19 a pound and these are not the small plumb-shaped tomatoes but big round ones that will cover a hamburger bun when sliced. Sparta Produce also carried Neese's sausage and liver pudding at a price you will find hard to believe. You can get items that are favorites with country cooks not found elsewhere, like Daniel Boone stone-ground corn meal mix, Allen County Kentucky pure sorghum, the Dutch Kettle line of jellies and jams and Relish Barn chow chow. When you stop in, introduce yourself to owners Ray and Shirley McCraw and tell them that you heard about them on the Chamber Briefing. AHGS NEWSLETTER FEATURES HARVEST & MORE: I found the recent issue of the Alleghany Historical-Genealogical Society Newsletter particularly colorful and interesting. The front highlights Harvest and Holidays exhibit in the Museum from now to the end of the year. Inside is a brief summary of recent Society programs, including a program on ham radio and the famous Siamese Twins Chang and Eng Bunker of Wilkes County. My favorite was a retrospective on Lou Reid Landreth who passed away last May. She was a very interesting woman who led the kind of challenging life more common in the 21st century, but quite unusual for the mid-20th century. She's one person I wish I had taken the time to know better. If you are not a AHGS member, the newsletter is available online. Since membership is only $10 a year, why not become a member and have it mailed to your home?

NEW MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: When I came to Alleghany in the early 1980s, there were still country stores in the county -- places where you could get everything a farm family might need, from groceries and overalls to nails and feed. The largest of those was Kennedy's Store at the corner of Turkey Knob and Mt. Carmel roads in what was once the Amelia community. It closed in 1987 in part because we had become less of a county of small farms that patronized such stores and good roads made it easier to get to larger communities and bigger stores. Kennedy Store is open once more and being operated by fourth and fifth generations of the Kennedy family: Joan Kennedy and son Taylor Halsey. Mixing the old with the new, it offers groceries and snacks, as well as arts and craft by many local artisans. QUICK EDITORIAL: I just finished War by Sebastian Junger. He writes about his time in Afghanistan as a reporter at a forward base that fought almost daily with the Taliban. This is a thoughtful book – not the blood, guts and glory you might expect from the title.

We tend to think of courage as something you have or don’t have, but Junger makes a strong case that courage is created and strengthened as soldiers develop a bond as they depend on each other to survive a life and death struggle. “You could be anything at home,” Junger writes, “shy, ugly, rich, poor, unpopular – and it won’t matter because . . , in a firefight . . . the only thing that matters is your level of dedication to the rest of the group. It’s that dedication that creates a band of brothers.

I’m not trying to make a point about war, but draw a point from Junger’s experience. When lives are intertwined in mutual dependence and cooperation it creates a spirit that is not easily duplicated. It is the spirit that newcomers love about Alleghany County when they talk about our sense of community. And local commerce plays an important part in that.

When I go to the grocery store and know the clerk behind the counter and know her young son is in hospital because her husband and I are in Rotary together, I ask about his condition and we have a small, but important conversation that I would never have if I drove 30 miles to buy groceries at Wal-Mart.

If I drop into the coffee shop for a cappuccino and start a conversation with a friend about a problem I’m having with my laptop, and the friend says bring it with you tomorrow and I’ll take a look at it, that kind offer builds a sense of community that ordering an espresso maker on Ebay will never do.

Yes, commerce provides jobs and is key to a good economy. But if you can have a group of people with good incomes living in the same area, and they drive north to another state to shop, east to another county to worship, and spend all their free time online, there is no community, no web binding those people together, no heart and soul that arises out of that group.

Last Friday the Chamber’s annual awards banquet was held at Olde Beau. We recognized people and groups who in different ways make a contribution to our sense of community -- to our collective soul.

That sense of community is strong but it is under threat today because we are pulled in so many directions away from those many small daily contacts that create the web of concern that is community. Better roads make it easy to find cheaper goods sold by strangers in another town. I can get anything over the Internet – watch sports, play games, find specials on Ebay or Amazon, and music on iTunes, get the news from Google – and never say a word to another human being. And people wonder why their lives feel empty.

We can so easily lose that web of community: If we lose (or fail to patronize) the local hardware store that will help you find one exact replacement nut while you catch up on bits of news with the clerk, if the coffee shop closes its doors, if we have no cafe where we go for good food but linger for conversation, if the civic clubs dry up for lack of members, if churches let division drive members apart.

Sometimes it requires small sacrifices to keep that web alive. It may require that an individual leave a safe job working for someone else and taking the entrepreneurial risk to establish a new, local business. It may mean time away from the Internet volunteering with a civic club. It may mean paying a few cents more to buy local while saving on gas.

Why do we have a Chamber Awards Ceremony? Because it’s a good night of fun? Yes. Because the Chamber makes a little money on the auction? Yes (Chamber staff like to eat too.) But also because I believe in a small way it contributes to that web of community.

Why do we have a Chamber? Because together we make good things happen.

NEW MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: STUDIO REDWOOD: Chris Davis is back in Sparta at 4 South Main Street, in Ike Forrester's former location and hers before that. When she saw the spotlight of her next-door neighbor Murphy's Mercantile that featured me in a Lambchops cap, she called, "Bob, I have something I want you to try on." I did. It's cute, and it may make the short list of gifts for Ruth, my wife, but it's not me. But it is one of many unique items in the shop. In addition to Chris' original art, framing, and faux finishes, she many delightful items: Jillie Willie Aprons (I said no to a photo -- I have my pride), children's books, furniture and a lot more that she's managed to engagingly arrange is just half of the old Northwestern Bank building.

WHAT A CROWD FOR HALLOWEEN! I think the crowd for Trunk 'N Treat at Crouse Park was biggest ever. And we had 16 decorated vehicles, which I also think is a high. Thanks everyone: Beta Club, Razor's Edge, Clark Hunter, the costume contest emcee, the Sparta Revitalization Committee and Merchants Committee. We all did good! QUICK EDITORIAL: We had a small but enthusiastic group for our first Chamber Quarterly Member Meeting Monday in the Blue Ridge Electric Conference Room. If you missed, we'll hold another in January. It's a time for us to speak face-to-face and exchange ideas. The meeting opened with a brief PowerPoint presentation on the impact of tourism on the county.

From time to time someone asks me what will it take for Sparta and Alleghany County to become a tourism community. The answer, as the PowerPoint illustrates, we are a tourism community as much as we are a Christmas tree community or cattle county. I hear the complaint a tourism business can only make money 8 months out of the year. Well that's twice the Christmas tree season. And if we put our heads together, we could probably come up with some ways to get folks up the mountain during the dead of winter. The question that needs asking and answering is: How can we better benefit from being a tourism community. I'm open to suggestions. I invite you to view the PowerPoint. Community looses a great heart: Virginia Setzer died yesterday at the age of 92. She once operated the Spartan Theater in the days when it showed Roy Rogers and Gene Autry flicks, but that was before my time. I always knew her as the elderly but vital soul of the annual radio Heart Auction and the epitome of kindness who greeted me when I dropped into the Carolina Silk Shop. From time to time she had scoured around her shop for a piece of material or button that I needed, and hemmed some trousers, but charged nothing or far less than she should for her time. More than that in this hectic world she always had time for and seemed eager for gentle conversation. Small towns have a character, a quality defines their spirit. That character is the distillation of a few key citizens and Virginia was one of the few. For me a part of what has been at the heart and soul of Sparta and Alleghany County has died except where it lives forever in memory. Family members will be at Grandview Memorial Funeral home Wednesday beginning at 6p to console friends and accept their mutual consolation. Services are 10a Thursday at Sparta United Methodist Church.

NEW MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: Mountain Hearth Lodge, an elegantly rustic Bed and Breakfast Inn off Vestal road at Milepost 231.5 on the Blue Ridge Parkway, is open under new management. One of the area's oldest Bed and Breakfast Inns, the facility offers seclusion and Parkway beauty in a location that is so convenient to the Piedmont. Reservations are being accepted for rooms at the inn as well as standalone cabins. JOBS, JOBS, JOBS: Albany Industries will open an upholstered furniture operation in the old B.C. Vaughan plant in Galax, VA, creating an estimated 335 new jobs. This is the first plant established in Virginia by the New Albany, MS, based company. No date has been reported for when Albany will start hiring, but applications are available online. Why not fill one out and be first in line! Also Inmar of Winston-Salem has announced 120 new positions to be added between now and Christmas. It's a 90-minute commute, but these are not just entry-level jobs, but have career potential. Online applications are being accepted.

As long as jobs are scarce in Alleghany County I will pass along announcements of jobs availability in the area.

QUICK EDITORIAL: Lexington, VA is a quaint town that Ruth and I have occasion to pass through from time to time and stop to browse the shops. In a gourmet cookware store I struck up a conversation with the owner, a young woman in her early 30s. I asked her how she came to start the store. "When Lexington was named a Main Street community, there were loans to help new business get started," she explained. "And I'd always dreamed of opening a cooking store, but it wasn't easy. It was a lot of work and there were so many meetings to plan how to market downtown. I'd fall into bed and complain to my husband that I'd be glad when we finished marketing downtown."

She paused. "Well," I asked. "Did the meetings stop?"

"No. One day I just realized that marketing downtown was a part of price of doing business. We had a meeting just last week."

Malls have owners that can market the merchants as a group, but not the independent merchant. If he or she wants folks to shop in the his or her business's neighborhood, you must promote, promote, promote.

We have a meeting every Tuesday at 8a in the Alleghany Inn Conference Room for that purpose. Any and all merchants are always welcome. Rocky Proffit is quoted as saying that taking time from his business for a meeting, is like taking time from fighting a fire in his plant to plan a fire escape route. It's hard to be away from the shop when the front door needs to be opened, merchandise needs displaying and employees need direction. However, marketing and promotion are not optional, they are part of the price of a successful business.

STUDIO TOUR THIS WEEKEND: Enjoy the fall colors as you tour the studios and galleries of local artisans for the NC Mountain Arts Adventure. The weekend forecast is perfect fall weather and the leaves should be at their peak. Check their website for more information or drop by the Chamber for a brochure. I've used the photo of Ronnie Hughes of Hughes Glass several times. Ronnie does beautiful work, but so do the other artisans. I like the picture because fire fascinates me and I'm doubly fascinated watching him use fire like a paintbursh.

Friday, Nov. 4, you’re invited to the Alleghany Chamber of Commerce’s annual Awards Banquet at the Olde Beau Golf Club. The social hour begins at 6:30 p.m., followed by a meal and program at 7:30. The Chamber Board of Directors is recognizing four individuals and groups: The Sparta Lions Club, River Rock Grill and Family Entertainment Center, George White and Sandy Rost. Tickets are $35 and available at the Chamber and will be available from Chamber Board members (as soon as I make the rounds to distribute them). The evening’s menu is salad, petite sirloin and honey-glazed salmon, asparagus with roasted red pepper, herb roasted red potatoes, bread, and pumpkin cheesecake for desert. QUICK EDITORIAL: Did the lights grab your attention? I think we can all agree that light is special, especially when it twinkles. I want to challenge each storefront to put the power of lights -- Christmas lights -- to work for you. The choose and cut growers of the Alleghany Christmas Tree Association received a $30,000 grant to market the Choose and Cut season. That's more than the Chamber has to promote the county all year! I can guarantee more folks will be in town looking for two things: A Christmas Tree and the Chirstmas Spirit. Think about it. Why would families drive a hundred miles or more if all they wanted was a tree (The corner grocer sells them at a bargain price)? They do so because are hoping to catch the Christmas Spirit.

What is the recipe for the Christmas Spirit? One part cool nip in the air. Two parts excitement of kids running through the tree fields. Three parts lights and sounds of Christmas. Four parts extra courteous merchants. And the secret to a great choose and cut season -- great for growers and great for merchants -- Families returning year after year to the town where they experience that Christmas Spirit. They don't come just for the tree. They can get that most anywhere. They come for the spirit.

I can also guarantee that those who don't find the Christmas Spirit will probably not return next year.

This $30,000 grant can be a one-shot boost to the economy. Or it can move our Choose and Cut season up a notch for years to come, but only if we work together to create that Christmas Spirit. One idea to help create that spirit is for every storefront to be decorated and lit for Christmas. If everyone did this, Sparta would twinkle like a Thomas Kincaid painting. Prove me wrong merchants. Light up Sparta for Christmas and see what a difference it makes. Share ideas with me on how to make Sparta Christmas Spirit USA and I'll share them in future Briefings.

By the way, the grant has created a website that is being heavily promoted and advertising is a bargain. Check out the rates. It's one way to get folks from the Choose and Cut farms to your store!

The walk and brief program will last about an hour. Anyone who is invested in seeing the high rate of local suicide decline or is just interested in Alleghany Lives is invited to participate. QUICK EDITORIAL: Saturday, Alleghany Lives sponsors the "Walk Out of Darkness" beginning at 10a in the Prayer Garden at Sparta United Methodist Church to call attention to the need to confront this county's history of high suicide rates. I hear some people expressing concern that Alleghany Lives wants to remove the stigma of suicide and in doing so risks making suicide a choice more easy to make. Nothing could be further from the truth. Alleghany Lives seeks to remove the stigma of seeking professional help when someone is depressed and contemplating suicide. Not all depression leads to suicide and not all suicide is a result of depression, but the majority of people who take their own lives have a history of depression.

Some of you may have heard me talk about my experience with depression following my father’s death. I spent more than two years slipping further into depression before I sought help. I know better. I worked 8 years in the mental health field. But I’m just as susceptible to embarrassment and shame of admitting I’m not as strong as I put on. And one of the blind alleys of depression is you believe you deserve the misery. No one deserves that misery.

The good news is that depression is one of the most treatable of the life-threatening emotional conditions, but you’ve got to want help, as much as life itself. If everyone in Alleghany County pledged that if the day ever came when they were contemplating taking their own life they would seek help, we could move to the bottom of that state list of suicide rates.

That’s Alleghany Lives mission statement: Asking for help is a decision you can live with. Please consider joining us in the "Walk Out of Darkness" in remembrance of the many friends and neighbors that are no longer with us because of suicide and in the hope that we can each pledge to end future losses.

By the way, treatment works. I have a hard time remembering when I have felt better!

TRUNK 'N TREAT IS COMING: The annual Halloween Bash at Crouse Park will be here sooner than you think. Sponsors, the Sparta Revitalization Committee and the Chamber, are recruiting volunteers to bring their car, truck or SUV to Crouse Park Monday, Oct. 31, around 4:30p to distribute treats from your car trunk, pickup bed or open hatch. Decorated vehicles are most welcome. If you can't bring a vehicle, donations of treats are appreciated (healthy treats are especially appreciated). Groups that would like to offer activities for youngsters that evening are welcome to call and discuss their plans. Great Mountain Heritage Festival: In spite of threatening weather, I've heard nothing buy good things about last Saturday's festival. Great entertainment. The Jubilee Dancers and Foothill Cloggers kicked up their heels. Wayne and Helen are always a treat. The JAM kids showed their stuff. The Rise and Shine Band gets better every day. Joe Thrift and Kevin Fore were a welcome addition to the MHF stage. And what a kick in the pants Kelley (left) and the Cowboys turned out to be. And, a new Possum Queen was crowned: Luella Lane AKA Kicking Deer (far left). May your reign be long -- a year or so -- and prosperous. Thanks to everyone that helped. NEW MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: Most of you are familiar with the red-suited elf who has a toy-manufacturing operation at the North Pole. It has always been long rumored that he summered somewhere south of the Pole, but when he settled in our community, it first struck me as unexpected. But then it made sense that he would chose the most delightful location in the world for his summer residence. And what a clever ruse to maintain his true identity. He poses as a retired dentist named Sam Simmons who disguises himself and plays himself during the holidays.

MAKING HAY FROM THE PARKWAY: The Blue Ridge Parkway is holding a 3-day workshop to hear input from Parkway communities and explore better ways to partner with these neighbors Nov. 5-17. Good News! It's close: at the Rex Theater in Galax, so we don't have to shoulder lodging costs. It's inexpensive: Registration for all 3 days is only $50. There's a free networking event and presentation by Ed McMahon Tuesday evening beginning at 6p. (More on McMahon in the Quick Editorial below).

I know a 3-day workshop in the middle of the week is more time than most folks can spare, but for those who have the time, I think this will be worthwhile. The detour has shown us how much traffic comes down the Parkway. And, if for no other reason than the Parkway's funding shortfall, I think Parkway officials are much more open to community partnerships. If you can't come to the workshop, come Tuesday evening. QUICK EDITORIAL: Ed McMahon, senior fellow with the Urban Land Institute, (this is not the Johnny Carson sidekick or the father of wrestling impresario Vince McMahon) is the most inspiring speaker I have had the pleasure to have heard on the subject of protecting important historic spaces from development and he does it in the context of respecting land development rights. That's a thin line to walk, but he does it. He is going to speak at the Parkway conference highlighted above as part of a free evening networking program.

I would encourage as many members as possible of the planning boards of the county and town to attend, as well as any interested resident. The concern that has been voiced about the impact on Parkway detour traffic of a number of eyesores on our main thoroughfares indicates the time is right for the thoughtful action McMahon encourages. MULTI-SKILLS TRAINING LAB OPENS: Be sure to attend Business After Hours Thursday, Sept. 8, 5 to 7 p.m. at the Alleghany Campus of Wilkes Community College for the formal opening of their new Multi-Skills Training Classroom. FIND YOURSELF ON THE FODDER TROT TRAIL: The Fodder Trot Trail and Corn Maze, 1.7 miles north of Sparta on NC 18 North, is open weekends and will be open (and weekdays by appointment) through the month of October. This year's seven acre corn maze is dedicated to the great rivers of the US and offers a host of other activities: pumpkin picking, play in the huge sandbox, straw jump, hayrides, cow milking machine, corn hole toss, hay bale maze for the little ones, giant slide and fire pits to reserve for your group's marshmallow roast. The Fair Comes to Sparta: The Alleghany County Fair has begun with Livestock Competition every night this week and the carnival arrives on Thursday with that great carnival food and rides. QUICK EDITORIAL: When I was a youngster there was a lady who had been confined to bed since childhood and our Sunday school class and others would visit and sing carols to her every Christmas. I remember that she was chronically in an ill spirit. I assumed it was because she had been born with such profound limitations.

While this woman could not walk, I remember her as having the upper body flexibility that would probably have allowed her to get around in a wheelchair. She may have suffered two disabilities. The first was the unfortunate condition she was born with. Second, she may have been victimized by the attitude of that time that the crippled were to be pitied, kept comfortable and out of the way. At some level she may have been ill spirited because she longed to be out enjoying Christmas rather than on public display in her bedroom as an object of pity.

Attitudes change, in part because some people refuse to be defined by old attitudes. Kandi Sheets was such an individual. I mark a turning point in my own attitude about the so-called disabled the night I was driving through town and passed Kadi in her electric wheelchair whizzing down Main Street -- I mean the street, not the sidewalk. (She might have run into a power pole on the sidewalk.) “Why she could be hurt,” I thought. “She should be” – then I stopped. She could be bedbound at home marking time till her life was over? Not Kandi. She went where she desired. She worked. She lived a normal life.

I won’t miss Kandi for the example she set for the disabled. I have long since quit looking at her -- and others -- as people to be pitied for their disability. I miss her for her always friendly greeting and upbeat manner. She was one of those rare people that always lifted my spirits when I saw her. She was a special person for the strength and nature of her character. I’m not sure my character is yet so well honed.

She did a lot of living in her 39 years.

Fried Pies -- Dennis Shaw and company -- did a great job. I managed a few pictures before it got dark and fun really began. I tagged some of the folks, but tagging sometimes works for me and sometimes not, so help me out and tag anyone you know.

NEW MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: Sometimes there is a convergence of events that seems almost too perfect to be coincidence. My mother had a small stroke recently, small enough that after several weeks in rehab she'll be able to return home, but not small that she doesn't still need some ongoing help with her speech regaining the ability to associate an object with the right word. Someone mentioned that she might be helped by something like flash cards. I thought, "Now I understand what Speech Path Tools is all about." Janet Tompkins is a local woman who left home and became known for her modeling. She's returned with this new endeavor: Speech Path Tools, a business that creates tools for professionals, caregivers and family members to use with the rehabilitation of speech after a stroke or other disabling event. Sam Williams' Book Signing: Local author Sam Williams will be at Blue Ridge Gallery (from US 21, go 2 miles on Pine Swamp Road) Saturday, August 20, 11a-5p, and Sunday, 1-5p. His recent collection of poems, Garden Snippets, are published by Rosenberry Books, a hand book publisher. The features woodcut illustrations by Diane Katz. This retired teacher is also a master gardener. His first book of poems is By This Christmas Moon. 336-372-1711

Fight Hunger with Fried Pies: Don't forget the big concert in Crouse Park this Saturday to benefit Solid Rock Food Closet. Happening Every Week: For more than two decades local musicians have been gathering at for a weekly jam session. Several years ago, they began gathering at the Crouse House and they adopted the name Crouse House Pickers. If you've not heard them, you are missing a treat. They gather each Monday at 6p in the Crouse House or, during our mild summers, on the porch or on the Crouse Park Stage, to play. The music is a mix of bluegrass, old time and country. No two sessions feature the same musicians, so each Monday's concert is unique. Check them out at Crouse Park just two blocks behind the Courthouse.

Buckaroos reopens. Photos on Facebook. The great little restaurant in the NW corner of the county has reopened under the new management of Carmen del Pino. She held a grand opening/open house Saturday that attracted a crowd of folks who enjoyed dinner and the good company. Check out the photos on the Chamber's Facebook page.
